100 Days Selected Project for Free Press

PublicSource is a nonpartisan, nonprofit media organization dedicated to serving Pittsburgh and the region. We provide in-depth public-service reporting and analysis, convene communities of shared interests and connect civically engaged citizens with local decision-makers.

Our award-winning team of journalists seeks to report on the effects of the incoming Trump administration on the Pittsburgh region, ranging from the Affordable Care Act, immigration, education & economic policies. We will deliver in-depth articles on PublicSource.org and our social media platforms over the course of the first 100 days of the Trump administration. Specifically, we will focus on how policy changes will affect local residents. As journalists, we will hold our elected officials accountable — on the national or local level — for promises made, amplify voices of people they serve and explain how their decisions impact our quality of life. We already have a track record of covering potential local effects of President-elect Donald Trump, with our stories, including “What effect will Trump’s win have on studying Pittsburgh air pollution” and “Pittsburgh considers becoming a sanctuary city in resistance to Trump’s deportation promises.” The latter was picked up by The Hill and created a stir among politicians and in the community. Our articles will feature people and or groups with compelling narratives and experiences, accompanied by powerful photography and video.

PublicSource is an integral part of the monthly news routine for thousands of residents of the region. PublicSource has been in operation since 2011 first under the fiscal sponsorship of Pittsburgh Filmmakers, and received its 501(c)(3) status from the IRS in November 2015. We have a bold vision for journalism and the growth of our audience. In a city where newsrooms are being downsized and less time is being allotted to meaningful storytelling, PublicSource embodies the principles of a free press in Pittsburgh.
